If you’ve missed the boat on booking something for your December vacation, we’ve rounded up four budget beach breaks for you to book for 2017…
1. Swell Eco Lodge, Mngcibe, Wild Coast
Set on the northern side of the Mdumbi River Mouth, Swell Eco Lodge is remote, quiet and stylish, yet wonderfully rustic thanks to handmade furniture and fittings in the rondavels.
The hosts – Lee-Ann and Justin – are knowledgeable of the area and warm – nothing is too much trouble and there is a whole host of activities on offer. Think ‘old school’ Wild Coast.
Self-catering rondavels for two from R375 per person. Catering on request.
Visit their website or call 072 346 5636.

2. Sedgefield Holiday Cottage
For most it’s just a pass-through on the way somewhere else up and down the N2, but Sedgefield has long been the Garden Route destination for discerning travellers.
Try Sedgefield Holiday Cottage, a rustic eight-sleeper timber cottage right on the banks of the Swartvlei River.
The birding is good, the fishing better and the ‘doing nothing’ just about unbeatable.
In season rates are R200 per person per day. (A minimum of R1200 per night for bookings of a minimum of 5 days).
Visit their website or call 044 382 2283.

3. Not Forgotten, Yzerfontein
They say the West Coast is a bit like Marmite – you either love it, or you hate it. There is no in-between.
If you’re a lover head to Yzerfontein and Not Forgotten. This classic laid back but stylish beach house sleeps eight and has all the mod cons.
Situated right on the sand in the sleepy village of Yzerfontein, it’s also only an hour outside of Cape Town.
From R513 per person per night, R4,100 a night for an eight-sleeper cottage.
Visit their website or call 021 790 0972.

4. Agulhas National Park
Live on the Southern tip of Africa, but haven’t actually stood on the Southern-most tip? Make a plan to get to Agulhas. Even if the novelty of standing on the edge of the continent was associated with the spot, it’s a rather special (and mostly overlooked) place.
The Agulhas National Park, with its variety of accommodation options, is the perfect base from which to explore the area.
From R530 per person per night.
Visit the SANParks website or call 028 435 6078.
