5 Coffee Shops to Visit in Hermanus

Whales might be Hermanus’ main attraction but the bookshops are a close second. And where better to visit after book buying than a coffee shop where you can sit back and enjoy the spoils

1. Oskars Delikatessen

This is recommended by Corinne Hendry from the bookshop Bookmark, for the best chocolate cake in town. The cake is thick and rich, with chocolate mousse icing. Mother and daughter partners Sanmarie Swanepoel and Lizanne Olivier are the brains behind this coffee shop, which has a light, bright feel and is central for exploring the town.

As an accompaniment to great coffee, they serve freshly baked pastries, scones, muffins and almond tart, and also make their own bread. The breakfasts and lunches are delicious.

2. CanD’s Kitchen

Restaurateurs Daniel and Candy are warm and welcoming, and have created a spot so homely and welcoming, with a delicious harvest table for lunch and an excellent breakfast. They also have fresh cakes and quiches. For Chris and Benade from The Book Collector this place is a regular haunt. For someone like me the bargain is that it’s dog-friendly and has the best coffee. It also has a filling Hangover Breakfast for those who need it.

3. Betty Blue Bistro

It’s easy to miss this little coffee shop but it’s the buzziest place in town for locals, and the table of freshly baked cakes and goodies is hard to resist. There are excellent juices, and a white and bright décor with flashes of colour that add to the modern clean feel. This is the spot for a cream cheese and lemon-meringue pancake. It’s child friendly, with lots of space, and is ideal for coffee and cake, and your new books.

4. Tulip Coffee Roasting

A new addition to Hermanus, it’s a little out of the way but worth making a special trip for. Beth and Noel Hunt from Hemingways love this new find. Watch (and catch the aromas) as Justin Dods does the coffee roasting. Toni Smith is the foodie and believes in fresh and healthy, and when locals flock to a place like this you know it’s good. It’s a breakfast and lunch spot and closes at 4pm so make sure you get there early. And if you like their coffee, like Dee Anderson from Quirk and Leopard Book Shop, you can buy some of your own.

5. The Cuckoo Tree

Here’s a sedate little place with tables in a lovely shady garden for when the weather is good. It’s mostly frequented by the older residents of Hermanus and has reasonably priced food. Locals in the know enjoy breakfast there (ask for the Craig Special). It is open in the evenings but best you book as it’s often full. The coffee is delicious and fresh cake is always available.
