Named after the Xhosa word for ‘admiration’, Imbuko is a Fairtrade winery committed to being an accountable South African citizen, with a work ethic that takes into account both people and the planet. The winery produces a range of quality wines and spritzers, has unusual tastings (see below) and serves trays of snacks to sample on their deck overlooking farmland. Here are several reasons to make the stop:

1. Sample award-winning wines

To sample Imbuko’s award-winning wines, including their Shortwood Red at R25/bottle! Imbuko raced ahead of other wineries this year to win Getaway Magazine’s Best Value Producer award for 2017. (Short wood is the technique of pruning the vines to leave only two or three buds. This reduces the yield, but improves the quality and flavour of the grapes.)

2. Satisfy that sweet tooth

For those with a sweet tooth, try Imbuko’s Pomüla spritzer range: pomegranate-marula, passion fruit, grape cocktail, berry-vanilla and Moscato spumanté – a bubbly, fun wine bursting with flavours. Pomüla is a fresh blend of crisp white wine and fruit juice with a touch of fizz. Summer in a bottle!

3. The ice cream

Suck on a spritzer popsicle: pomegranate & berry-vanilla – perfect for those hot days.

4. The wine, duh

A selection of Pinotage, Cabernet and Shiraz jams, lovingly made by Tannie Elsabé. Yum!

5. Wine and pie pairing

A gourmet pie and wine pairing: a combination of four gourmet pies from Pasticcio Gourmet bakery in Paarl to be savoured with celebrated wine-maker Van Zijl’s signature collection. This delicious pairing combines Pasticcio’s mouth-watering pies with top-notch wine, honouring the Van Zijl family heritage. Try the Van Zijl Coffee Pinotage with traditional bobotie pie.

6. Wine tasting for the brave

A ‘Dapper Muis’ tasting (A ‘Brave Mouse’ tasting) – not for the faint-hearted! Sample 25 wines of your choice. Can you do it? The challenge is on.

7. Kid’s delight

Something for the kids: a gourmet mini-pie pairing with iced tea, kiddies pizza or chicken pops and potato faces.

8. Snacking

Enjoy snacks while sipping on quality wine with a backdrop of olive groves and buchu fields. Favourites include a bread board with dukkah, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and a snack jar with olives, chip sticks & droëwors.
