The wines are delicious and worthy of your attention and a tasting there never disappoints. The estate is very popular for weddings that will be forever remembered and many an engagement has been done there, with the groom on his knees in the time-honoured fashion, a sparkler in hand and the magnificent Franschhoek mountains for a backdrop.

If it all gets too much for you there is the luxury accommodation to be had –at a price—but what a delight to spoil yourself once in a while.

The restaurant overlooks the vineyards with a cosy indoor section when it is either too hot or too blustery. The kind of cooking you will find there relies on fresh ingredients from the local area so the menu changes regularly.

Portions are generous and tasty and presented beautifully. Expect things like superb smoked potato salad, fish cakes with dill crème fraiche, and sweet potato and goats’ cheese samosas with chilli garlic sauce for starters.

Mains of braised shredded beef with a rich sauce and seared trout are perfect mains and the chocolate nemesis with salted caramel and lemon curd makes a serious sweet ending.

Obviously, the wines of the estate are great accompaniments to it all. Menus are priced at R295 for two courses. Bookings are essential, especially in summer.
