Handmade beers are all the rage and have devotees who are fierce in their loyalty to certain brands. One of the most interesting stories is the one at Stellenbosch Brewing Company on the Joostenberg farm at Muldersvlei.
Here Bruce Collins and his team have been turning out superb beers since late 2015 and in this short space of time have become a great beer destination.
Crowning their achievements recently has been the win at the SA National Beer Trophy Competition of their Hoenderhok Bock, a dark German-style charmer.

In addition to winning the coveted Beer of the Year trophy, the beer also won a Gold Medal and the trophy for the best beer in the Amber Category. Their Stellies Mass Hoppiness (isn’t that cute?) won a Silver medal just to keep up with all the accolades. 199 beers from 64 brewers in 6 provinces made the going really competitive. Mazeltov as we say in Sea Point!
Visit them at Joostenberg where you can try some great beers in situ and ogle their fabulous copper brewhouse and other equipment and also see the chicken shed on the property where they started and which gave its name to the winning beer.
Platters of suitable grub to go with the beer are available and sitting there you might never want to go home—believe me.
