One of the Cape’s most popular winelands restaurants, 96 Winery Road in Stellenbosch, recently turned 21.
In an industry where becoming popular is relatively easy, but staying there is a major achievement, this is quite remarkable.
The brainchild of Ken Forrester and his business partner, Martin Meinert, this oasis in a sea of choices has stayed the pace delightfully. Today a third partner Natasha Harris brings her culinary expertise to the game while Ken’s brother, Allan, takes care of front of house with seamless precision.
96 Winery Road is a cosy cottage on the side of the road with a refreshingly relaxed outside area when the weather is playing along.
The staff, many of whom have been there for years, is charming and friendly in the country manner, making a visit there feel like coming home—a home where you don’t have to do a thing but enjoy yourself.
The food has always been the very best of Cape winelands’ cuisine with generous flavours and portions that do not shrink from proclaiming their presence. The famous duck and cherry pie, which Ken brought from his long ago restaurant Gatriles in Johannes burg, is still very much there while their magnificent Hollandse Biefstuk is irresistible.
The beef tartar is superb, while the mussels in sherry and cream and served with chorizo is a knockout. Finishing up with a platter of some of the best desserts in miniature is just the way to go for that sweet ending.
The wine list is one of the very best in the Cape—as well it might be with those two gents at the helm—featuring fabulous French champagnes as well as very reasonably priced local gems for the likes of you and me.
