Allée Bleue, just outside Franschhoek, so close one can almost smell the money, has always been noted for making great wines, many of which are what I would call “user-friendly”—read not the thing to break the bank.

They have four ranges, which are named Ultra-Premium, Premium, Starlette and Blue Owl. In them, you will definitely find something to please most tastes and pockets.
Whether it is interesting reds with superb noses, delicious whites or great fizz, they have what you need. Winemaker Van Zyl du Toit knows very well what he is doing and ensures consistent delivery of just the right wine for just the right occasion.
Recently he has released some Limited Release wines which he has called Black Label—beautifully packaged and great gifts for someone who knows a good thing when he sees –and tastes –it. These have been made from meticulously sourced grapes from single vineyards which have been carefully nurtured into being the best of the best. Van Zyl says “These wines are not about volume. It is about showcasing the very best of our cellar.
They are for collectors and connoisseurs. “ Don’t let that put you off—I have tasted them and they are magnificent. The Cabernet Franc 2012 is fabulous, rich and heady with superb deep dark red berry flavours and an enticing nose. Only one barrel was considered good enough for bottling.
The Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 is redolent with blackberry flavours, a glorious colour, some herbaceousness and a hint of mint to lift it to magnificent heights. The Chardonnay 2014 was whole bunched pressed and aged in French oak barrels for 28 months which is certainly not evident on the palate.
The Pinotage 2014, quintessentially South African, is full of flavours of plums and strawberries—even a grape or two.The wines are priced at R800 per magnum and R350 for a 750ml bottle. Get them while they last.
