Winter in the Cape is the perfect time to go searching for the perfect red wines we have here.
Words by Greg Landman
Summer is far too hot and besides, that is when we are looking for cold bubbly and smoked salmon, preferably sitting at the side of some water tinkling away. But winter comes, things change significantly.
Even when we have those perfect crisp days when the sun brings out the brilliant greens of the land, thoughts of red meat casseroles and fabulous red wine predominate.
When you get into this frame of mind, fire up the jalopy and head out to Somerset West to the domain of Giulio Bertrand at Morgenster. Here you will find superb red wines made by Henry Kotze and his team, some of which have distinct Italian style.
Try Lourens River Valley, a Bordeaux style blend, superb, mainly Merlot and Cab Franc, intense with deep red berry flavours, some Christmas cake nuances, and the Morgenster Reserve, subtle and spicy, complex, perfect for winter days.
Then there are the Italian influences in wines like Nabucco, made from Nebbiolo, dry and mysterious, and Tosca from mainly Sangiovese with some Cabernet and Merlot, with liquorice and blackberry notes on the nose and palate. If all this intensity is getting to you try the Caruso, deliciously pink and crisp from Sangiovese with limited skin contact, perfect.
The Nu series, well-priced and user friendly, is in a state of change of label at the moment, but you will find them there, excellent value red and a white wines that will not break the bank.
