Picnics can be great fun but for those of us who find sitting on the ground just fine for the Bedouins and who think it’s necessary to have a table, the ideal picnic has been thought up by the people at Allée Bleue in Franschhoek.
They call it Chicnic, and that’s what it is. Nevertheless it’s very child friendly with places for the young ones to have a ball while the parents relax under great big umbrellas. The setting is great, overlooked as it is by the gorgeous Franschhoek Mountains. The estate is well known for its herb gardens and many of these have been included in the picnic offerings which come to the table in a basket with collapsing sides that reveal all the goodies therein. The well-known wines of the estate can be enjoyed while you tuck in. The kids menu consists of free range chicken nuggets, homemade French fries, chocolate brownie, fruit juice and potato crisps.
In the adult picnic basket are things like fresh farm bread with chunky jam, soy and sesame cured beef stir fry with noodles, salted chicken with coconut shavings, artisanal cheeses, baby melktert, and fruit from the farm. The salads are particularly good as they come from the farm itself. Two glasses of their Starlette Blanc help to keep things going.
Prices are R185 per adult and R65 per young one. A vegetarian option is available.
