Vondeling on the Voor Paardeberg Road near Paarl is the home of some of the most delicious wines I have tasted in many a year. The feeling of wide-open skies is intoxicating – one feels free of the city in a most exhilarating way.

It is a very popular wedding venue and with good reason. There is a chapel that makes it all the more popular as it can be a one-stop destination. The chapel looks like a movie set – a fairy tale – very romantic. There are seven en suite bedrooms in the Manor House, all beautifully appointed.
The wines here are the responsibility of the talented Matthew Copeland, who has been doing his thing there for the past decade. The wines he makes are packed with fruit flavours and are all redolent of the place from which they spring.
They range from a delicious Rosé (basically Merlot) and a very quaffable Chenin at R70, to something a whole lot more serious like their flagship white blend called Babiana – Chenin, Viognier, a touch of Rousanne and Grenache Blanc, at R198. Truly superb. The Chardonnay (R135) is matured on the lees for seven months which makes it nice and creamy, but it remains very vibrant and fresh. The Petit Rouge Merlot is a bargain at R75, lightly wooded in French oak, smooth and silky, a delight. The new kid on the block is Monsonia, a 2015 vintage and a knockout blend of Shiraz (85 per cent), with support from Mourvedre, Grenache, and Carigna. It’s spicy and intense, a wine for serious drinking, at home in the very best company (R215).
Do take time and visit here to drink it all in—if you will excuse the expression—for yourself.
