I can think of very little that will be more fun than heading out to Cosecha on the Noble Hill farm at Paarl for one of their fabulous picnics.
Cosecha is an excellent Mexican restaurant where the guacamole is made right at your table and is either zoomed up or down in heat so you can have it just the way you like it. The rolling lawns which are heavily treed gather at the edge of a small lake where ducks cavort.
Families love the ambience of being in the country and the delighted kids having fun while their parents take a glass or two of the farm’s delicious wines attest to its popularity. The picnics need to be booked in advance and the baskets come in two sizes—for 2 at R540 including a bottle of wine—and R960 for 4. Kids’ picnic baskets can be arranged at R65 with just enough to keep youngsters happy.

The baskets are lavishly filled with charcuterie and cheeses, black bean and grilled corn salad, a green salad, and their famous guacamole. Delicious artisanal bread and homemade tortilla chips help to move it all along. Desserts of seasonal fruit and yoghurt parfait and Mexican wedding cookies dusted with powdered sugar take care of the sweet side of things.
You can sit on the lawn on blankets provided if you like or if that sort of thing doesn’t appeal make sure you order a table and umbrella—so civilised. While it is not on the picnic basket menu, do try the sensational Margarita Cheesecake at the restaurant—way beyond anything Grandma ever thought up.
