One of the most delightful places to visit is Glen Carlou in Paarl. Magnificently situated, overlooking the Paarl Valley towards the iconic rock that gave Paarl its name, the views are breathtaking.

From here you can see the Taal Monument pointing its finger accusingly at the serene sky, and the vineyards that stretch to the N1. It’s an easy drive from town and makes the perfect place to taste wine and to eat.
The restaurant here is under the sure hand of Chef Johan Stander, who delivers delicious plates from his kitchen without any frills and fancies. If the weather is good, sit outside and bask in it all. Johan’s take on a traditional Greek salad is delicious – feta soufflé, pickled cucumber, black olive and tomato dressing (R60). It might raise an eyebrow or two in Mykonos but works perfectly in Paarl.
Then there is the superbly fresh salmon gravlax with orange, fennel, dill, lemon crème fraiche and capers, a triumph of flavours and textures, delicious (R110). The pork belly main with baked apple, carrot crackling and celeriac purée (R180) is worth the journey alone.
Superb pan-roasted line fish with pickled mussels, mussel fritters and mussel crème seems to be overplaying the mussel thing but is a triumph (R185). Finish up with rich crème brûlée with slow-roasted banana, banana sorbet and orange shortbread (R80), irresistible. One can order two courses at R260 or three at R350 if you prefer.
The wines of the estate are perfect with this kind of food, so linger not. Get there and see for yourself.
