The Winelands are packed with great places to eat, and drink excellent wine. The winter months see many of them cutting their cloth to fit so to speak by offering special winter menus at very good prices.
One of my favourite places to go any time of the year, and even more so during winter, is Michael Broughton’s superb restaurant Terroir on the Kleine Zalze Estate in Stellenbosch.
This year Terroir is not dreaming up a stand-alone menu for winter but is offering the classic menu at prices that are much friendlier. From May to September two dishes from this menu are offered at R395 which includes a glass of Kleine Zalze wine – either main and starter or main and dessert. If you find the two-choice menu too delicious – and I cannot think why not – the other option is the chef’s choice of four dishes at R550 which also includes a glass of the estate’s wine.
Favourites like Terroir’s superb prawn risotto with Américaine sauce are included – “We just have to keep it on the menu – if we take it off everybody complains,” says Broughton. One of my best dishes is the superb duck with fennel, honey and orange closely followed by the flame grilled rib-eye served on Parmesan velouté with a robust Shiraz sauce adding punch – irresistible.
Bear in mind Terroir will be closed from June 25 to July 17 for their winter break, so dilly dally not and get thee to them soon. Phone 021 880 8167
