One of the most popular destinations in Constantia is Steenberg, which can supply you with two great restaurants, a world class hotel and Spa, wine to make you sit up and take notice, and a superb golf course.

Their restaurant Catharina’s is named for the feisty lady who started it all in the 17th Century, Catharina Ras. Recently refurbished and brought nicely up to date with large glass doors that let in plenty of light and new light wood furniture, it is a delight to visit. On the walls are whimsical cut outs and there is a large open fire place for those chilly days and nights. Oh, it is still elegant, but a lot more relaxed—and relaxing—in its own space.
The kitchen is under the sure thumb of Archie Maclean, a Scot who doesn’t believe in frills and fancies – just honest food that is great to look at, smells enticing and is a pleasure to eat. The winter menus here –at R165 for two courses at lunch and R265 for three courses at dinner, feature some great favourites.
Both menus include delicious roast cream of tomato soup with crème fraiche, a succulent 200gm sirloin steak for mains and rooibos crème brûlée and frozen melktert for those with a sweet tooth.
