#CountryCyclist Kit Guide

_PTR8556Adventure enthusiast Ian Macleod has become something of an equipment fanatic during his transmogrification into #CountryCyclist.

Here are his suggestions about some of the kit you’re sure to encounter in this tech-centric world…

The Bike: Scott Spark 910, 2014 Model This is a high-end machine. The carbon-fibre frame with dual suspension and some of the best components out there see to that. Sporting the latest in 29-inch wheel design for maximum rollover and traction, this is an ideal ally for rugged stage races like the joBerg2C, especially with a tubeless conversion to eliminate most punctures. The Nude2 shock system even allows on-the-go adjustment of ride settings to match varying terrain. R45 999. www.scott-sports.com/za/en

GoPro
GoPro Hero3+
Almost indistinguishable from magic. The GoPro and its innovative attachments add a new dimension to outdoor sports. Whether strapped to the head or mounted on your bike/kayak/helmet, it somehow captures all the dramatic colours of whatever ascent, crash or sunset you can throw at it. The chest strap is particularly useful for cycling, and the bullet-proof casing means there’s no need to hold back on the adventure. R3 299 – R9 999 depending on model and package.

Bike Rack: Thule ProRide 591 Don’t let the sleek, lightweight aluminium design fool you, this is the only roof-mounted bike carrier available that supports up to 20kg. Clever attachments mean it fits onto most roof racks, and secures your bike in place with surprisingly little effort. The self-adjusting frame holder also means firm mounting that won’t damage your machine. Lockable by key, the ProRide 591 even offers added protection against theft. R2 099. www.thule.com/en.za

Nutrition: Sponser Formulated in Switzerland and trusted by multiple world-class and Olympic medal-winning cyclists, Sponser is only available in South Africa through Cycle Lab. The modest, almost clinical product branding is apt for a supplement maker unlike the rest. I’ve used the protein shake to keep the tank full during the day, the recovery drink to replenish stores in the half-hour following training and the isotonic drink to keep energy levels up during exercise. www.cyclelab.co.za

Cycle Lab: Fourways Megastore Launched in November last year, just across the road from the original Fourways location, the new Cycle Lab Megastore has taken the humble bike shop to an entirely new level. It’s more a cycling theme park than retail space. Amid miles of the best kit available today, you’ll find a complete bike workshop, fitting stations, outdoor track to test equipment, the popular Pedals coffee shop and – most important of all – the expert advice to make it all worth your while. (Corner William Nicol Drive and Leslie Road, Fourways, Johannesburg). www.cyclab.co.za
