While the full cost of the recent Knysna fires could never be accurately calculated due to the loss of human lives, experts are currently claiming that it will be above the R4 billion mark.
The long-term damage to the tourism industry also has to be taken into account, but there seems to be some light at the end of this very dark tunnel. Rebuilding and repairs will likely begin soon, which will inevitably lead to an influx of cash into local businesses.
SANparks is currently busy mapping the fire for a more accurate damage report, while the Ministry of Tourism has stated that its immediate concern is to provide for those who lost their homes and to restore services as quickly as possible.
On Monday the Knysna Municipality stated that the fires were contained, but that the situation was still being monitored closely.
More than 1109 firefighters battled the blaze, while millions of rands worth of necessities were donated from all over South Africa
