During their search, the police found 48 armadillo girdled lizards. In South Africa, this lizard is a protected species.

These lizards used to be popular pets, living up to 25 years in captivity. After wild numbers dwindled severely, the government took a step towards making ownership illegal.

The armadillo girdled lizard is one of the few species of lizard to give birth to live young.
