Police recently arrested a man for being in possession of protected wildlife estimated to be worth over R700 000.
This arrest forms part of multiple vehicle checkpoints, aimed to improve safety during the festive season in the Western Cape.
Police officers set after the suspect after he sped away from the checkpoint. After a high-speed chase, the police managed to stop the vehicle near the Northern Cape.
During their search, the police found 48 armadillo girdled lizards. In South Africa, this lizard is a protected species.
These lizards used to be popular pets, living up to 25 years in captivity. After wild numbers dwindled severely, the government took a step towards making ownership illegal.
The armadillo girdled lizard is one of the few species of lizard to give birth to live young.
