Land Rover’s brand new Discovery has just gone on sale in South Africa.
Known simply as the Discovery and now the Discovery 5 as we were expecting, this new model is a massive departure from the boxy 4×4 we know and love. The new car is curvy and elegant, but Land Rover is adamant that it’s even more capable off-road than the car it replaces.
In terms of technology it’s a giant leap forward. The optional 7 seat layout can be adjusted remotely from an app on your smartphone and that’s just the start. With more than 20 app features available, the new Discovery is one of the smartest, most connected vehicles currently on sale.
With loads of kit included as standard across the range, it’s bound to be a magnificent thing to live with on a day-to-day basis, but it remains as practical as ever. The towing capacity is claimed to be 3500kg and it will be able to tackle even the harshest terrain thanks to the most advanced terrain response yet.
Two engines are available from launch – one petrol and one diesel. The diesel engine packs a 190kW/600Nm punch, while the petrol delivers a creamy 250kW and 450Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission that sends power to a full time four-wheel drive system.
Prices start at R980 000 and go up to R1 440 000 for the limited First Edition model.
Our motoring correspondent is attending the launch of the vehicle as you read this, so expect a more comprehensive report to follow shortly.
