Bubble Gum Macaroons at Majeka

Bubble Gum Macaroons at Majeka

When you think of afternoon tea, you might well picture a stuffy, highbrow affair. Not so at Majeka House, a boutique hotel in Stellenbosch that brings a touch of modern style to the age-old celebration of hot drinks and tasty nibbles.

Expect treats like bubble-gum macaroons (a house speciality), salmon mousse on rye, Madeleines with a touch of cayenne pepper, croissants with three kinds of in-house butter, and fresh scones that the pastry chef encourages you “get while they’re hot”.

Let’s not forget about the tea! My friend chose the Majeka House Exclusive: a herbal infusion with liquorice root, aniseed, rooibos leaves, fennel seed, elderberries, rosehip peel and a touch of hibiscus, lavender, sunflower, rose, and calendula flowers.

I went for Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearl, which sounds like the name a celebrity couple would give their child. This famous Chinese tea is made from tender and healthy green tea shoots, handpicked in spring. Long leaf tips are then scented with freshly cut jasmine blossoms and rolled into small pearls.

And so we spent the afternoon in the luxurious M-Lounge, which might make you feel like you’re back in a 19th-century drawing room. With its crackling fireplace, large bookcase and old clocks, it’s the perfect place to linger on a winter’s day.

Eugene Yiga was a guest of Majeka House (26-32 Houtkapper Street, Paradyskloof, Stellenbosch).

Afternoon tea is served daily from 14:30 to 17:00. The price of R200 per person includes a selection of loose leaf teas, and a coffee or a glass of sparkling wine.
