Giorgio Nava, the Maestro of Italian cooking in Cape Town, is also very well known for his expertise with meat.

His 95 on Keerom in town has always been one of the top Italian places to eat, as has been his other restaurant, Carné, which specialises in meat – obviously. He has reinvented Carné in Constantia and has cleverly blended the best of both his worlds there, calling it 95 at Parks.

This beautiful old house, a landmark in the area, now offers Italian specialties as well as the meat dishes for which it became known in the recent past.

A good way to try it is The Italian Experience which is a 6-course tasting menu at R330pp. There are dishes like L’Insalata di Trota – trout with new potato salad with parsley dressing, Caprese salad with Burrata mozzarella, anchovies, and olives, and superb lamb ravioli made with slow baked Karoo lamb shoulder doused in rich sage butter and parmesan.

Giorgio’s famously light potato gnocchi in sage butter is a must-try, as are the fresh West Coast mussels steamed in tomato white wine and fresh herbs. The other meat side of things is taken care of by sirloin tagliata with rocket salad and a perfect ending is a deliciously rich tiramisu with all the trimmings. All the dishes have Italian names on the menu so you know they are the real thing.

There is no BYOB option but wines start at R135 and the selection features some treasures from Constantia and elsewhere. Oh! And they are open on Mondays when one usually struggles to find somewhere nice to eat.
