Kobus-Burger,-Cellarmaster-at-RietvalleiGood-looking 39-year-old Kobus was born and raised on the family farm and heavily influenced in his wine making by his father Johnny, as well as his cousins, the De Wets.

Nevertheless, after attending Paarl Boys High, he studied mechanical engineering at the Cape Technikon, after which he practised in Stellenbosch. The pull of the family wine business, however, proved too strong and started to exert its influence over him from 2002.

He spent some time at Die Bergkelder in Stellenbosch and in Saint Cyr, France, before joining his father at Rietvallei. He is married to Elizabeth, an interior designer from Namibia, and they are parents to Estée (10), Annie (6), and twin three-year-old boys – quite a handful. The couple travel to exotic locations like Russia on business, while leisure time is spent entertaining friends at home, where “the wine is really good.”


Set in one of the most beautiful areas of the Western Cape, Rietvallei in Robertson has distant mountains edging the horizon and an almost garden-like atmosphere. Country roads are lined by cannas demarcating the various farms, there are ‘eende te huur’ (ducks for hire to keep the snail population in the vineyards under control), stud farms where prized horses graze contentedly, and a welcoming kind of hospitality that comes easily to the locals.
