Bacteria-based Art Under the Microscope

Creating a piece of art with a pencil, paint or chalk is so last century.

If you really want to stand out these days, you have to use bacteria and a petri dish. Actually, these works of art are a result of long hours in the lab waiting for results and looking for something to keep the mind occupied. And what started out as a simple hobby, has grown into an international competition.

The American Society for Microbiology actually hosts an annual contest for the most original piece.

Here is a selection of our favourite pieces for 2017. The winner hasn’t been announced yet, but we’ll post an article when they do. In the meantime, enjoy these 100% bacteria-based artworks.
