Excelsior Manor Guesthouse offers luxury accommodation in the heart of the Robertson Wine Valley on a working wine farm.
The Cape Dutch Revival Manor, once a family home, has been lovingly restored and offers elegant comfort and serenity along with personal hospitality.
Summer days can be spent beside the deep blue swimming pool, which is situated on an elevated, yet secluded wooden deck on the southern face of the house.
Enjoy breathtakingly panoramic views of the vineyards and the Langeberg Mountain ranges. For the more adventurous explore the farm and scenic view points by mountain bike or golf cart.
Vinophiles can blend, bottle and label their ‘Own Creation’ in Excelsior’s tasting room, situated on the water’s edge of the farm dam which is abundant with birdlife.
We asked Excelsior Winemaker, Peter de Wet, a few questions about life, wine and having a positive attitude.
Can you describe the best glass of wine you’ve ever had the pleasure of drinking? And the worst?
It was a Cote Rotie from a top producer drunk from a plastic cup in a hotel with my then girlfriend, now wife. I can still taste the wine today! The worst was probably a “natural” wine with about 5 different faults. I am normally a tolerant wine drinker, but I could not get past a second sip.
Is there something that makes South African wines special? Can you describe it?
South African wine seems to have new world fruit with old world structure and complexity. This is unique in the wine world and something you only realise once you travel to other countries and compare wines.
What do you find attracts you to people – as friends?
Sense of humour, and debates/discussion.
What do you like most about yourself? And dislike?
I love my lifestyle, but hate the fact that I am getting older – the niggles have started.
Which living person do you admire most?
Not many famous people. I admire ordinary people just going about life with a positive attitude.
What can you just not do without in your life?
Family, and glass or two of wine every night.
WIN a 2 night stay (1 room) for 2 people in the Manor Guest House, which is inclusive of a wine tasting, blending and bottling your own creation at the tasting room as well as 12 bottles of wine (2 cases) and a complimentary dessert for 2 people at the farm deli. The total prize value is R4 700.
