The warmer weather means it’s time to spend more time outdoors, from going on picnics to lazy outdoor lunches and sitting on the beach. But as great as being outside is, it also increases your chances of getting sunburnt.
You can recognise a fellow I’ve-been-burnt-to-a-crisp-by-the-sun comrade by watching where they apply sunscreen. If they carefully rub it in behind their ears and on their earlobes you know they have been burnt before. These are usually not the actions of a proactive person. But this can all change because prevention really is better than cure. And all it takes is ensuring that you cover these often-missed spots in sunscreen.

What to look for in a sunscreen
Always use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, that is water resistant and provides UVA and UVB coverage. Whether you want a spray or lotion is up to you, but what matters is how you apply it, how much you use and how often you do so.
Top tips to remember when applying sunscreen
Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you are exposed to the sun. Your skin needs time to absorb the sun lotion. Make sure you rub in the sunscreen properly and reapply every two hours or after swimming.

Behind your ears & on your earlobes
If you’ve sunburnt your ears before, you know how terrible it is. Not only is it painful, but it also does very little for your appearance. Your ears are red and then they start peeling. Put a pea-sized amount of SPF lotion on your fingertip and thumb and then rub it over your ears, making sure you don’t miss a spot.
The back of your knees
You don’t really know how often you bend your knees until you burn them and feel it every time. Ensure you reapply a water-resistant SPF lotion so that if you sweat, you are still covered. If you sweat a lot or if it is a particularly hot day, reapply every hour instead of every two hours.
Yes, you can and should apply sunscreen to your eyelids. Just make sure the area is dry before applying SPF to avoid any getting in your eyes. This is important, even if you are wearing your favourite pair of shades. If you have sensitive skin and eyes, be careful because not all sunscreen is gentle enough for your eyes. You can also look for eye cream with SPF in it.
While we are not suggesting you slather your hair in sunscreen, we are suggesting that you put some on your scalp if you have a parting. If this gets burnt and starts peeling, it actually looks like you have dandruff and it really hurts. Once you have applied SPF, wear a hat for extra protection.
The tops of or under your feet
Don’t forget your feet when applying SPF, and this includes the top AND the bottom. Pay particular attention to your toes as well. If you’re wearing sandals, make sure you take them off to apply sunscreen, so that you avoid a sandal tan.
