A Library for Kruger’s Rangers

Kruger National Park field ranger Lucky Ndlovu, who forms part of the front-line in the war against rhino poaching, never thought he would one day be a librarian.

But this task is now his as part of the Project Relax initiative between the Kruger National Park and SANParks Honorary Rangers, who established a library in the Kingfisherspruit Ranger Post to improve the quality of life of field rangers and their families.

Lucky took over his new responsibilities in November 2014, but his main priority, as with that of his fellow rangers, is still to fight poachers.

Project Relax evolved from an idea by Arina Jooste, wife of the commanding officer for SANParks Ranger Services, Major-General (r) Johan Jooste, and the SANParks Honorary Rangers. The aim is to ease the emotional stresses and physical hardships endured by SANParks Rangers Corps and their families in the daily battle against rhino and other animal poachers in the park.

The SANParks Honorary Rangers of the Vaal Triangle region chose the Kingfisherspruit Rangers Post as the entry point of their involvement in Project Relax during a visit in 2014. With assistance from Kingfisherspruit section ranger, Richard Sowry, they identified the need for a library.

The region donated used books, as well as new books on nature topics, to help rangers expand their language abilities and their knowledge of nature.

The Vaal Triangle regions’ members Andries and Myrtle Mans installed a “mini library”, consisting of a cupboard with books and a full library card system, with Lucky as the librarian.

“This type of initiative is to be commended and demonstrates the true spirit of volunteerism which forms the cornerstone of the SANParks Honorary Rangers,” said Trevor Kolk, member of the SANParks Honorary Rangers National Executive Committee.
