So, if you’re in the process of organizing a girl friend’s last 48 hours of freedom, or just a “why not” weekend escape with your other half, read on to learn how to get the most out of your 48 hours in the Mpumalanga countryside.

1. Try trout fishing

It would be a real shame not to give this a go at some point during your stay — after all it’s what Dullstroom is famous for.

There are a few places that offer lessons, such as the Dunkeld Estate or Stonecutters, where beginners will soon be casting their rods like pros.

Don’t expect to catch much on your first try though, or you’ll probably come home feeling disappointed. Never before has the phrase, “Patience is a virtue” been more appropriate.

2. Go clay pigeon shooting

After a long drive down a bumpy dirt track, you’ll eventually come to Field and Stream and the clay pigeon shooting facilities situated there.

Following a quick lesson, you’ll be asked to take your position and call out when you’re ready for the clay to be launched into the air. Take your eye off it and you’ll miss, but it’s the most satisfying feeling when you eventually get one. Just make sure to book ahead of the bachelor parties.

3. Enjoy the spa at Walkersons

If you’re lucky enough to be staying at Walkersons Hotel & Spa, you certainly won’t be disappointed by the on-site spa which is described as a “haven of serenity.”

Here you’ll be able to book yourself in for all the usuals; manicures, waxing and massages, but the more adventurous might like to opt for the “Healing Crystal Indulgence” package, a unique 90-minute tension reducing treatment.

4. Eat at Art of Food

When it comes to eating out in Dullstroom, there are two places which stand out. First is the restaurant dedicated to Wallis Simpson, the American social butterfly who was the cause of King Edwards VIII’s abdication from the throne.

Mrs Simpson’s restaurant itself looks like a shrine which may put some visitors off, but the food is worth visiting for. For another top quality meal, try Art of Food on the main street. Special dishes here include the Asian bowl and the homemade pies, all of which are mouthwateringly tasty.

5. Drink at Wild about Whisky

Whisky fanatics will rejoice when they hear about this institution situated at one end of Dullstroom’s main road.

Here you’ll discover more whiskies than you ever thought existed, and visitors are given the opportunity to sample six at once.

However, if you’re not a whisky lover, there is also a gin tasting option; each of the six gins arrives with accompanying garnishes ranging from strawberry and pepper to lemon and thyme.
