#CountryCyclist is back! Well, sort of. The wheels and helmet are gone (after some tearful goodbyes). The outfit has changed. But the sense of adventure is as strong as ever. Introducing the new, (perhaps) improved #CountryRunner.
Many of you will recall how adventure enthusiast Ian Macleod, spent the first four months of the year preparing to ride the 900km joBerg2c mountain bike epic. We all enjoyed that so much (despite what Ian call’s “dark times” near the end of the journey to Scottburgh), we’ve decided to send him out again. This time his challenge is just two days long, 25km per day through the mountainous trails of the northern Drakensberg.
Of course, the endurance element is more of an excuse to explore a fantastic portion of the South African countryside. Ian will spend four days in the area, finding the best country hotels, markets, activities, food and more.
On both nights before running, #CountryRunner will stay at the secluded Greenfire Lodge. Made up of timber cabins and a central lodge, this is one of the quietest spots in the mountain range. From here he hopes to complete his runs well before lunch, and then head out in the Ford EcoSport he’ll be road (and off-road) testing to uncover gems of the northern Berg. Be it a bite to eat at the Tower of Pizza or coffee and a chat at Toplodge, there is no shortage of exploration to be done.
En route home, #CR has a night at the splendid Three Trees Lodge. One of the primary spots from which to discover the nearby battlefields, this also comes with the promise of terrific birding, hiking, food and country décor.
So join us in the search for the best of the Berg. Through September we’ll bring you tales of #CR’s preparations and preview content on the places and people we expect to encounter on our next online-meets-outdoors experience.
