Must-do Markets & Farm Stalls

Must-do Markets & Farm Stalls

They’re the hot new one-stop-shops for finding everything that’s good and clean and fresh about our countryside. Here are some of the best…

Linga Lapa Midlands
If a farm stall can be an emporium, Linga Lapa qualifies. Occupying an elevated spot off the N3 at Nottingham Road Exit 132, this family-run, rambling establishment is a centre for first-rate local produce.

Owner Ian Mackay says every farm stall has its own features. “Ours is the biltong made here.” He points to the sign at the entrance: ‘The Butcher, the Baker, the Biltong-maker’. The butchery is also famous for its home-made wors and Midlands meat, while the breads and pies in the bakery department are legendary too.

Other local produce includes Indezi River Cheese from Balgowan, frozen berries from the Berg, Ballina Ice Cream from Alverstone, frozen ready meals made in Nottingham Road, trout from the Kamberg, beer from the Nottingham Road Brewing Company, and coffee from Terbodore in Curry’s Post.

Add to that ladies clothing, cottage furniture, woven rugs, Nguni hides, plants and a vibrant restaurant and you have a one-size-fits-all-stall. A braai evening is held every second Wednesday of the month. – Andrea Abbott

The Farm Stall at Halls Nelspruit
Anyone who has ever been to the Lowveld in the last 50 years will know the Farm Stall at Halls, a few kilometres before arriving in Nelspruit from Johannesburg. After tiny beginnings selling Halls fresh produce, juice and jams, it has had a wonderful revamp. Not only can you still buy Halls’s famous avocados, but the delicious goodies the Lowveld has to offer – jams, relishes, chutney, fresh and dried fruit and nuts.

The coffee shop has a lovely garden and the gift shop has a good selection if you’ve forgotten someone’s birthday. If you want to relive your childhood visits to Halls, make sure you take the R104 into Nelspruit from Johannesburg and not the N4 bypass road. – Sue Adams
