Must-do Markets – North West

Plan your weekends around local country markets and stock up on fresh, homemade treats. These are our favourites in and around the North West Province…

Life market

1. The Life Market

Celebrate the good things in life at this food and goods market in the historic Snowflake building/mill in Potchefstroom, which contributes to a wonderful, rustic atmosphere. The community turns out to showcase their unique, quality handicrafts and you can find a wide range of quirky decor items, jewellery and clothing. The mouth-watering smell of delicious artisanal food wafts through the building and there’s always great live music and a lekker vibe.

2. Harties Market, Hartbeespoort Dam

Harties market

This rustic market at the foot of the Magaliesberg is set on lawns with shady trees. Vendors have been carefully selected and offer fine foods, organic produce and original arts and crafts. Spoil yourself with a beautiful floral-print scarf or straw sling bag. Taste olives and drool over the baked goods. Kiddies have their own play area so you can shop till you drop.

  • When: Every Saturday, 09h00-15h00
  • Where: On the R511 entering Hartbeespoort

3. Welwitschia Country Market, Hartbeespoort Dam

Built under ancient, giant trees not far from the Hartbeespoort Dam wall, 40 rustic wooden shops are clustered around an aviary that’s quite the showstopper. Visitors are encouraged to meander along the brick-paved streets from one shop to another and to be enchanted by dreamcatchers and tie-dye clothing, exquisite silver jewellery and funky crafts. This market draws locals and tourists alike and has become something of a Harties landmark. There’s a playground for kids and additional entertainment on Sundays and public holidays. A bush pub and a family restaurant are also on the grounds where you can refuel after all that shopping.

  • When: Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays 09h00-17h00
  • Where: Corner R104 and R512
