4X4 drivers are in for a unique treat as South African National Parks (SANParks) will be hosting an offroad experience in the Garden Route National Park from 2 to 3 May 2020.
Called “The Road Less Travelled Off-Road Experience” the event will allow nature lovers the chance to drive on roads that are usually closed to the public. 4X4 enthusiasts will be able to trundle along paths through fynbos, indigenous forests, across rivers and streams and along narrow dirt tracks through the mountains.
In a press release to the media Wilderness’s area manager Sandra Taljaard explained that this will allow participants to get as close to nature with a minimal impact on the environment.
“The drive is scenic and picture-perfect which is what the Garden Route is famous for,’ says Wilderness’s area manager Sandra Taljaard.
Drivers will be allowed to choose from one of three routes, which have been graded for difficulty from 1 to 4 and which will take them through the Karatara and Goudveld forests and on a near untraversed path from Windmeulnek to Platbos offering unique views of the Outeniqua Mountains.
Funds raised from the initiative will go towards conservation projects in the region, with the idea being that, dependent on popularity, this could become an annual event.
