The bakkie-based SUV segment is exceedingly popular in South Africa, with the Toyota Fortuner receiving the lion’s share of local sales.
Two new competitors are set to enter the segment within the next few months. Well, one at least. We’re still waiting for confirmation on the second.
The first is the Isuzu mu-X. It’s based on the KB and it was first introduced into Thailand back in 2013. Not that Chevrolet left South Africa, it left a giant Trailblazer sized hole and the mu-X hopes to fill it.
The mu-X will be powered by Isuzu’s well-known and respected 3.0l turbocharged diesel engine. It will also have a 5-link rear suspension, which Isuzu claims will give it exceptional ride comfort.
On the inside it looks similar to the KB, albeit a bit classier. It will also have 7 seats, so the whole family will be able to come along on 4×4 trips.
Pricing and specification will be announced closer to its local launch in the second half of the year.
The second entry is the Nissan Terra, which is based on the new Navara. It hasn’t been confirmed for South Africa, but it would make a lot of sense to bring it here.
Not much is known about the Terra at the moment, but it will likely use the 2.3l twin-turbo motor found in the Navara.
