If you want a seven-seat SUV but the Fortuner is a bit truck-like for you, have a gander at this.
The Peugeot 5008 has to be the surprise car of the year for 2019. I wasn’t expecting a car of this size, this level of finish or polish, and I wasn’t expecting it to be as flippin’ gorgeous as it is, inside and out.
Peugeot has certainly upped their game of late, but even with that in mind, the 5008 is an impressive vehicle. Statuesque and angular, the 5008 is a beautiful iteration of the modern SUV, with enough angles balancing the strong lines to make it appealing to just about everyone.

We all know that SUVs are the flavour of the decade, and it is also evident that a lot of buyers would like seven seats, even if they don’t use all of them often. The 5008 has a great approach to the rear row of seats – you can take them out in mere seconds. Personally, I think this is the answer because you can keep the rear seats in the garage until you need them and take advantage of the extra luggage space. Then when you need those two extra spaces, you can reinstall them in under a minute. Or you can leave them in place and just take them out as and when you need. The key is how simple and quick it is to perform this task.
The 5008 isn’t just a one-trick pony though and is a genuinely good car that does just about everything well. The suspension, as is common with French cars, was beautifully set up and coped with rough roads with grace and aplomb, while on long trips it feels like the ultimate cruiser.
How does it look?
The fantastic interior is the highlight in a long list of positive attributes because it feels as though it has been lifted from a far more expensive vehicle. I loved the patterned seats, while the list of comfort and convenience features is extensive, as is safety. I’d go as far as to say that the 5008 has one of the best interiors on the market at the moment. Even if you’re not looking for a seven-seater, go and sit in one to experience it for yourself.
What’s under the hood?
Two engines are available – a 1.6 THP turbo petrol unit that produces 121kW and 240Nm while using 7ℓ/100km, and a 2ℓ turbodiesel that makes 110kW and 370Nm, using a scarcely believable 4.8ℓ/100km. The petrol models are likeable enough, but the diesel is the model that will win you over. Six-speed automatic transmissions are standard across the range.

What’s the catch?
Obviously it’s not flawless, though. Fortuner drivers will argue that the 5008 is an MPV with SUV looks, and they’d be right – you can’t compare the two when it comes down to ruggedness and obviously 4×4 ability (of which the 5008 has none).
Secondly, I couldn’t get properly comfortable behind the wheel of the 5008, despite it having an almost infinitely variable seating position, powered by electricity. In the passenger seat, I was fine, and when I wasn’t driving I was fine, but on the road, I just felt a bit off.
What’s the cost?
A good guide as to how good a car is how close you can get to guessing the price. If the car is priced at R400 000 and you guess R350 000, then it seems bad value. If you guess R550 000 then you’d be very happy to pay the R400 000. Well, the 5008 is a car that genuinely comes across as more expensive than the sticker prices of R534 900 to R599 900. A 5-year/100 000km warranty and service plan is included in the price.
