Fairview opens the First Skywalk for Goats

Words by Greg Landman

One of the most delightful –and very popular—places to visit in the Cape winelands is Fairview, where their famous goats walk up and down their tower, much to the delight of people of all ages. Not only are the goats a huge attraction but here you will find a restaurant called the Goat Shed where some of the best breads in the country are paired with charcuterie, cheeses and equally wondrous wine. It’s all very French without any of the pretentiousness.

Charles Back, the owner of Fairview , says that during the kidding season (yes, it’s really called that) it was decided to bring the goats up to the area close to the tasting room so that visitors could interact more closely with these beloved animals. He said, “We received such an overwhelming response that we created a large paddock for the kids to take up a permanent residence right next to our Goat Tower.

Here, under the shade of the oak trees, all are welcome to say hello to our goats. To ensure our older goats don’t feel left out, we’ve added a skywalk from the Goat Tower into the grassy paddock to ensure interaction for all the goats.” Guests can watch the kid goats as they take turns on a “see saw,” balance on a “surf board,” and climb and play on a number of other obstacles. Guests can also feed them by buying a bag of goat food for R10 with R2 going to the Animal Welfare Society.

If you are looking for something really original, why not head there and see for yourself.
