Doolhof Cellar Door

The Doolhof Estate in Wellington pays tribute to its Afrikaans name (Labyrinth) with some wines named after the Cretan legends where the Labyrinth played such a huge part in Greek mythology.

The estate was bought by the Kerrison family in 2003 and they obviously have an affinity for this sort of mystique. The Legends of the Labyrinth series has great reds like the Minotaur, deep dark and mysterious with power to spare, a blend of pinotage, merlot, Malbec and shiraz. Then there is The Dark Lady, The Lady in Red (and white) all fabulous.

DOOLHOF TASTING ROOM

The place to taste them is at their elegant tasting room in Wellington and if you are lucky you might even find their talented young winemaker, Gielie Beukes hovering around. If it all gets too much for you they have a guest house that you can book into to prolong the pleasure.

On site dining is a pleasure especially on the big veranda overlooking the Wellington Mountains. If you have the energy, there various activities like horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and river walks. Personally I like the indolence of dolce far niente.
