Blaauwklippen Sunday Market

To market, to market… To Blaauwklippen Sunday Market in Stellenbosch, to be precise, where you’ll be bowled over by superb arts, crafts and food in an extra-special setting…

One of the most delightful ways to unwind on a Sunday is to go to one of the many markets in the Cape winelands. One of the very best is the one at Blaauwklippen on the R44 just outside Stellenbosch—open every Sunday to the delight of its many fans.

There are dozens of stalls under the ancient trees of the venerable estate, all offering high-quality merchandise, with very few mass- produced goodies in evidence. The food side of things is very well taken care of with Turkish borek pastries, Mexican food, and generous potjiekos of lamb, veggies and good old pap.

If you are hungering for genuine German bratwurst or deliciously rich, smoked sausage, you will not be disappointed. The place that sells the smoked meats has one of the best pork liver pâtés I have come across in a long time.

In the same shed you will find raw-honey chocolate in various forms, either coated in almonds or cranberries or poured into a tray in which there are various berries and nuts. The resulting slab is broken off and sold in sizes to accommodate your pocket – and taste of course. Irresistible.

If the idea of walking around looking at things with a glass of bubbly in hand appeals – so civilised, after all shopping is thirsty work – buy a bottle of the fabulous Blaauwklippen bubbly and do just that.

Kids are taken care of with various activities to keep them busy while Mom and Dad keep an eye on them from close up—but not too close. The crafts section is particularly excellent here, with superb wire sculptures that would be great in any art gallery. Lifelike big cats are magnificent – a real labour of love by a real artist. The brass lamp section is a quirky delight – seek it out. All in all a most pleasant way to get in the country mood—no wonder it’s so popular.
