Durban’s beachfront was hit by massive waves on Sunday, but a clean-up mission is currently underway.
These large waves formed due to a combination of strong winds and a coinciding spring tide, but the situation is expected to dissipate by today (14 March 2017).
The cost of the damage is yet to be determined, but teams of workers have been deployed to get things back to normal as soon as possible. A video of the waves battering the Durban coast can be viewed below.
For the moment all Durban beaches – Battery, Country Club and eThekwini – are closed and patrols have been put in place to ensure the public’s safety.
Beaches are expected to open again shortly, but officials will be keeping a close eye on the situation.
That’s good news to those planning on celebrating Human Rights Day (21 March) by spending the long weekend at the coast.
