Rain Brings Sweet Relief to the Karoo

The drought-stricken Karoo has finally experienced some rainfall and residents are rejoicing.

Aberdeen resident Gert van Rensburg could not contain his excitement and decided to go for a celebratory swim.

Even the local wildlife went for a dip.

A major hailstorm made its way through Graaff-Reinet on Wednesday, an unusual sight in a region that has been so heavily impacted by the drought. According to the SA Weather Service, the town has received 40.8mm of rain since Monday.

Some of our Facebook followers shared some lovely photos following the rains. Annelise Vorster Meyer captured the rain-drenched streets of Loxton. You’ll find more photos on her Facebook profile.

This gorgeous image from Murraysburg was captured by Jan-Hendrik Swiegers and even featured on the front page of Die Burger.

Keep an eye out for our February 2020 issue from Monday 13 January, where Julienne du Toit and Chris Marais look at how the five-year drought has impacted the Eastern and Northern Cape.
