The Fundimvelo Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage in KwaZulu Natal recently closed its doors permanently.
This comes after increasing security threats to the orphanage’s staff and animals.
Earlier in the year there was a poaching attack where two rhino calves were killed for their horns. The staff present on the day were also assaulted. As such, the staff and animals’ safety was a priority for the orphanage, but after consultations with security, anti-poaching experts and police, the decision was made to shut the facility down.
Both the staff and animals have been moved to an undisclosed location where their safety can be ensured. All donations to the centre will go towards funding the new facilities currently looking after the orphaned rhino calves.
