December is here…
Well, almost, but to get you in the mood, our December issue is already on sale. So find a spot to park off and let us take you on a journey through the southern African countryside.
1. Peace Comes with a Smile
Obie Oberholzer finds both in the southern Free State town of Philippolis. Turn to page 22 to read about his meeting with a Sister of God and travels to this rural town.
2. The Spirit of a Karoo Christmas
The bright lights of a township in Graaff-Reinet have been drawing thousands of visitors every season for twenty years. Julienne du Toit and Chris Marais take us on a walk through the festive light fantasia of Acacia Street.
3. Where are Ophelia, Fire Walker and Holderstebolder?
Fiona McIntosh finds them among other modern masterpieces in the splendid Norval Foundation Sculpture Garden outside Cape Town.
4. The Sole of Great Brak
Looking for those shoes called Grasshoppers? Here’s the spot. Home of this proudly South African shoe for 160 years, the factory at Great Brak River on the Garden Route is still the heartbeat of the village.
5. On the Water
Kick back, pop the bubbly, and lap up these idyllic waterside settings with our eight Country Escapes on page 66.
6. Perfect Storms
Fiona McIntosh brushes up on her kayak, lilo and anvil skills to venture deep into the Tsitsikamma’s Storms River Gorge.
7. Mbuluzi Beckons
Swaziland’s little-known Mbuluzi Game Reserve is without the Big Five, which means splendid birding on foot.
8. Holiday Reading
Nancy Richards selects her top ten local titles for some serious and not so serious reading this December. Turn to page 84 and 85 for her recommendations as well as her five favourite audiobooks on page 86.
With the holiday shopping season in full swing, Colin Cullis explains why the golden age of shopping malls is coming to an end.
10. A Fare of the Heart
Chef Daniel de Villiers honours his heritage at De Volkskombuis in Stellenbosch, especially at Christmas, when he takes traditional food and gives it a special twist.
11. Win an Unforgettable Stay at Makalali River Lodge
Situated on the banks of the Makhutswi River in a private game reserve in the north-eastern Lowveld, Makalali River Lodge has three private camps each with six luxury thatched suites. One reader could win a two-night stay for two worth R25 000. The prize includes two nights’ accommodation in a suite, all meals and a daily game drive. To enter, turn to page 71.
12. The Regulars
Not sure what to do these December holidays? Turn to page 8 for our festive Diary. If you’re stumped for gift ideas, our December Country Kit is packed full of goodies (and loads of chances to win).
