4 of the Most Expensive Lodges in South Africa in 2018
To most South Africans the ideal weekend away is close to home, affordable and fun. But it’s only human to wonder how the rich and famous spend their weekends, which is why we scoured the internet looking for the most expensive bush retreats in South Africa.
expensive lodges in south africa

Google gave us a breakdown of the average per night rate on a map and while these rates aren’t exactly affordable, we can’t imagine Elon Musk spending a night in a suite that only cost R6000.

Here are 4 of the most expensive places in South African where you can find the ultimate luxury bush experience.

  1. The 8-Night Luxury Bush Trilogy (Limpopo)

Quite a few of these prestigious lodges are owned by the same company, so they’ll often be sold as packages. This 8-night luxury bush experience includes accommodation and food.

The 5 star lodges you stay at include the Madikwe, Timbavati and the Sabi Sand Game Reserves.

Not included are flights, which is an additional R22 000 as well as other essentials like cellar wines, premium spirits, champagne, cognac, cigars and cigarettes.

The suites come with private game viewing decks, the game vehicles are luxurious and you can have a champagne picnic close to wild elephants.

R73 180 per person sharing (R9147.50 per night)

2. Tswalu Kalahari

From R23 000 per night to R141 500 per night.

This is one for the family. You could pay the single occupancy rate of R23 000 per night, or take your partner along and only pay R17 500. But if you’re a family person, why not book out the whole place for a staggering R141 500?

Tarkuni lodge

Settled between two mountain ranges, Tarkuni is the Oppenheimer family’s own personal home.

For R141k you get exclusive use of the Tarkuni, which has 5 luxury suites, a dedicated chef, your own private guide, vehicle and tracker. All drinks are included, as is babysitting if you want the leave the younger crowd back at the lodge while you go get drunk on a game drive.

Spa treatments and gift shop purchases are unfortunately not included in the price.

3. Dulini Leadwood Lodge, Sabi Sand, Limpopo

R15 400 per person per night.

That price doesn’t seem too rough at first, but take a partner along and you’re looking at R60 000.

With only three suites carefully distanced from each other, Leadwood Lodge offers the idyllic honeymoon setting.

The suites are intimate, secluded and feature an outdoor shower, private pool, heated bathrooms and massive tubs. You could go a whole weekend without seeing anyone, but there is a world-class restaurant on sight, so you might want to leave the confines of your luxury bubble for that.

It does seem to be the last word in refinement in South Africa.

It’s worth keeping in mind that some high-end lodges don’t even bother advertising their rates. And you just know that ‘price on application’ is a nicer way of saying, ‘keep on Googling poor person.’

If this has inspired you to plan a weekend away, here are 8 budget bush breaks that won’t break the bank.
