Let’s go to the beach
If you’ve missed the boat on booking something for your December vacation, we’ve rounded up four budget beach breaks for you to book…
1. Swell Eco Lodge, Mngcibe, Wild Coast
Set on the northern side of the Mdumbi River Mouth, Swell Eco Lodge is remote, quiet and stylish, yet wonderfully rustic thanks to handmade furniture and fittings in the rondavels. The hosts – Lee-Ann and Justin – are knowledgeable of the area and warm – nothing is too much trouble and there is a whole host of activities on offer. Think ‘old school’ Wild Coast.
Self-catering rondavels for two start from R450 per person per night. Catering on request.

2. Sunset Villa and Cottage, Langebaan
I’ve been a regular guest at Sunset Villa for years, and one of my greatest pleasures is to sit on the balcony with a book and drink in hand, whiling away an afternoon watching kite-boarders, boats and yachts glide past on the lagoon. I’ve even seen manta rays and plenty of seals playing in the turquoise water just below the house. Situated in the older part of Langebaan, on the water’s edge with unsurpassed views, this self-catering home offers a three-bedroom villa, as well as a two-bedroom cottage with a separate entrance. The house is built to resemble a ship’s bow, and standing on both the upper and ground-floor patios, it does feel as if you are on the deck of a ship. A small path on the property provides access to the lagoon, where you can swim, fish from the rocks, or launch a kite-board or paddleboard. For longer strolls, take the coastal walk north to the main beach or head south towards the yacht club. There is a well-equipped kitchen and built-in braai at both the villa and cottage, but it’s also an easy walk to popular restaurants such as Pearly’s or Driftwoods. This is a place to unwind and enjoy the magnificence of this natural waterside setting.
The self-catering villa starts from R1 900 per night and sleeps six, which works out to R316.67 per person. The cottage starts from R1 500 per night and sleeps four, which works out to R375 per person.

3. Not Forgotten, Yzerfontein
They say the West Coast is a bit like Marmite – you either love it, or you hate it. There is no in-between. If you’re a lover head to Yzerfontein and Not Forgotten. This classic laid back but stylish beach house sleeps eight and has all the mod cons. Situated right on the sand in the sleepy village of Yzerfontein, it’s also only an hour outside of Cape Town.
From R5 500 to R7 000 per night per cottage. These cottages are quite big and sleep eight, so families can share the cost.

4. Agulhas National Park
Live on the Southern tip of Africa, but haven’t actually stood on the Southern-most tip? Make a plan to get to Agulhas. Even if the novelty of standing on the edge of the continent was associated with the spot, it’s a rather special (and mostly overlooked) place. The Agulhas National Park, with its variety of accommodation options, is the perfect base from which to explore the area.
Prices start from R1 305 per night for two people, which is R652.50 per person.
