1. Shire Eco Lodge – Amatola Mountains, Eastern Cape
The forested hills of the Amatole region have always held a mysterious splendour of sorts. This open-plan, wooden chalet is quirky, yet homely and warm, and the ideal spot to feel ‘part’ of the indigenous Xholora forest.
The chalets sleep four people and feature fully equipped kitchenettes and braai facilities. The river-side options feature an open bush shower. You can even book a homemade organic meal.
Hiking, horseback trails and bird watching abound.
Review: “At the foot of an impossibly large forest, we found this little piece of Eastern Cape Heaven… It feels unbelievably far from civilization but in case you forget any essentials, town isn’t too far… Unsurprisingly, we will be returning to this little piece of J.R.R. Tolkien’s paradise found in South Africa’s back-yard of the Eastern Cape!” writes Ryan.
Price: R651 per person, per night.

Rooms are stylishly furnished and all open onto a big veranda with comfortable chairs overlooking a sprawling lawn and out across the farm.
Review: “This was by far the best B&B we have visited… The room was very big and clean, the beds were really comfortable… You can see Anne has experience in hotel management and will go the extra mile to take care of the guests,” writes Wiebe.

3. The Lookout Apartment – Mossel Bay, Eden District
This newly rennovated mezzanine apartment, perfect for two, is situated in a quiet back street facing north across the spectacular Mossel Bay. It neighbours onto a natural green belt so you can spot Cape Eagle Owls, franklins and dassies from the garden.
Tandem skydive, shark-cage dive, surf, fish or go on a guided tour of the Point of Human Origins cave system, all within 10-minutes’ drive. Or just sit back and soak in the sea views.
Review: “The place is absolutely gorgeous. The view of Mossel Bay from the lawn is unmatched. The unit is very clean and cosy and well designed. We also enjoyed the complimentary wine provided and the collection of movies to watch,” writes Siddharth.

4. Shooters Hill, Walkerson’s Estate – Dullstroom, Mpumalanga
Dullstroom (and surrounds) is synonymous with trout fishing and the 800-hectare Walkerson’s Estate offers access to some of the finest dams and rivers. Get a group of friends together to spend a weekend at the kiddie-friendly Shooter’s Hill, a 10-sleeper cottage on the estate.
The original owners created Walkersons with a Scottish country manor feel, with natural stone and wood and lots of interesting nooks and crannies – it’s luxury personified.
Look out for zebra, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok and other antelope from the covered verandah of this popular Airbnb South Africa venue and make use of the trout rods and reels that the owner supplies at no cost.
Review: “It is a beautiful, picturesque and very private location with stunning views from every window. The house is well equipped and serviced right down to logs and kindling for the wood burners,” writes Stella.
Price: R3,509 for the cottage per night

5. The Beaches – Garden Cottage – Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal
The South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is often referred to as the ‘holiday coast’ or the ‘golf coast’ so to stand out amongst a whole whack of accommodation options, you have to be rather exceptional.
The Beaches – as the name suggests – is right on the beach and furnishings and fittings are comfortable and homely, just as you would like it in your own beach cottage.
Relax by the pool in the lush tropical garden or partake in a spot of fishing off the rocks in front of the property.
Review: “The unit was clean and was serviced daily, a huge plus. The bed is SUPER comfortable. The location is excellent, right next to the beach… Nice weber available to have a braai. There even was some juice, cookies, milk and water in the fridge. We will definitely return,” writes Chantelle.
Price: R600 per person, per night
