KwaZulu-Natal, Leisure Bay, South Coast
Set in a lush garden among large trees in the tropical vegetation of Kwa-Zulu Natal’s South Coast is the small Plumbago B&B.
A trove of creativity, Libby Goodall (co-owner with her husband Mick) decorated the three guestrooms in her idiosyncratic yet elegant style. It is in unpretentious and quirky breakaway – it felt like staying at an eccentric aunt’s beach house. The two upstairs rooms open onto a wrap-around wooden balcony with views into the trees and onto the Indian Ocean.
The deck is a perfect setting to snuggle up with a book and fall asleep to the sound of the waves on a rainy afternoon. The downstairs room has a garden view and a dressing room. It is a good spot for bird watching in the garden and you might be lucky to spot a resident bushbuck or blue duiker.
Fling a beach towel over your shoulder for an early morning stroll down to one of the secluded coves like Kidd’s or Peter Pan’s Beach. Take a dip and return for a hearty breakfast in Libby’s open-plan living room/kitchen. Libby also packs a mean padkos hamper if you need to be on the road before breakfast. Leisure Bay’s beaches are considered the best on the South Coast and are shark safe as well.
With the waves in the background and indigenous trees surrounding the house, it’s an absolute paradise.
