I don’t ‘do’ picnics. They are not for me and never have been. Anyone who has to sit on the ground to eat obviously doesn’t have a chair. What I consider a ‘real’ picnic is the one at the Vergelegen wine estate, where you can have a delicious meal and their fabulous wines, complete with a table setting, in an ancient camphor forest. The basket includes artisanal bread, farm butter and biltong pâté, courgette and Parmesan tart, Parma-style ham, peppered roast beef with pickles, pork pie with Cape country mustard, and cold poached salmon with lemon mayonnaise.
These are all in manageable portions that won’t sink you. The cheeses include Gorgonzola with fig preserve and toasted walnuts, Healey’s mature cheddar and the superb Forest Hill Brie, while dessert is a potted mixed berry cheesecake. The picnic is R195 a head, book in advance.
