If a peaceful, idyllic setting is calling you to recharge your batteries, plan your next country escape to Trout Cottage in Franschhoek…
The idea of withdrawing from the hurly burly of life is not something reserved for religious communities. As a matter of fact the ones I know work a lot harder than the rest of us. No, what I am talking about is taking some down time and refreshing your batteries, which will make things go a whole lot better when you get back into the swing of things. Pace yourself, and learn to compartmentalise your time.
What better way to do it is there than to go to a little cottage very privately placed on its own trout dam. Situated on the fruit farm called La Verdure, where horses graze in paddocks as you drive up, the setting is idyllic.
The cottage itself is two bedroomed (both en suite) with a veranda overlooking the dam where you can fish or swim if you so please, or just sit and watch the sun go down while you sip a glass of the famous bubbly from here.
It is self-catering with an open fireplace for those chilly evenings. The good news is that it is within minutes of the town which has some of the best eating places in the country so you don’t have to feel totally deprived—only when it suits you. There are other cottages on the farm, all charming, but Trout Cottage is the pièce de résistance.
