Champagne Sports Resort, Central Drakensberg
At a glance it’s a stylised valley from a Swiss Alpine summer. But you’ll get to Champagne Sports Resort in just over four hours from Joburg and half that from Durban. Slung in the lush contours below Champagne Castle and Cathkin Peak, this is the ultimate mountain resort for the outdoorsy holidaymaker. Four-time Grand Slam doubles winner Kevin Curren established the resort in 1996, and every corner betrays his love for sport.
The 18-hole golf course has an enjoyable layout, making good use of the dramatic backdrops, a twisting river and tricky slopes. There are many other activities on offer, from tennis, swimming and badminton to bowls and mountain biking. For an inclusive experience, you can stay in the main hotel with its moreish buffet, while the 90-odd chalets offer a little more privacy and freedom. – Ian Macleod
