It’s where winelands vistas meet the feel of the bush – and all just 15 minutes from Pretoria. Welcome to Kievits Kroon.
Working weekends can sometimes be, when you’re lucky, an adventure into the unknown to try out a venue for #CountryEscapes. We’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a few weekends away at Kievits Kroon and review it for one of our editions on the best countryside getaways and spas.
Located just 15 minutes from Pretoria and 45 minutes from Joburg North, the place feels no less secluded than those hours from city centres. The Cape Dutch architecture complements Highveld weather and surrounding landscape for an unusual but supremely relaxing atmosphere of winelands meets bushveld.
Kievits Kroon really is the winelands of Gauteng. Every inch of the property feels like the countryside escape you were in the mood to venture out to. Immaculate gardens and friendly smiles all round, a meander about will cleanse the soul with every breath of fresh air.
Headlined by a world-class spa, the estate also boasts excellent restaurants, bars and conference facilities, and a range of accommodation options. A stay here is certainly not complete without a visit to the spa.
The dining experience is a fine one indeed. Each of the estate’s restaurants and bars have their own style and ambiance to match. The signature restaurant, Granita, offers a seasonal menu of fine dining and taste sensations. We enjoyed one of their 7-course summer dinner menus paired with an excellent selection of the country’s finest quality wines. The dishes served are delicate, but flavoursome and beautifully complemented by the glass of wine it’s paired with. Here the chef may even pair the unusual with something unexpected, but the creative combinations on each plate are certainly pleasing on the palette. Dining in the wine cellar is an absolute must too, and best booked ahead of arrival.
If in the mood for a carvery, Kingsley’s Restaurant offers a sumptuous spread, catering for buffet breakfasts, lunch and dinner. Whether you feel up to a hearty meal or a light lunch, menus are tantalising and are certain not to disappoint. Pop in to one of the estate’s 3 bars for a round of your favourite and some cheerful company. For special occasions or even just an indulgent treat for yourself, a booked picnic or high tea is highly recommended.
The layout of the estate is incredibly comfortable. Once settled in, it’s all to easy to simply relax and soak up the laid back pace of the place. Laze at the pool, enjoy a leisurely game of chess or meander around the property, Kievits Kroon certainly has the feel that nothing else exists beyond its boundaries.
