A selection of three of more ‘Once-in-a-Lifetime’ Country Escapes…
1. Ant’s Hill, Waterberg
Located on a private reserve in the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, Ant’s Hill is spectacularly perched on a cliff edge looking down into a ravine and a waterhole that hosts a number of wild creatures, including the resident porcupine. The lodge appears to have been hewn out of the rock face, and sundowners on the overhanging deck offer breathtaking views of this unspoilt and game-rich area. Ant’s Hill has played host to pop stars Mick Jagger and Beyoncé among others, while the two privately appointed honeymoon cottages with their huge, four-poster beds, private decks and sunken bathtubs that appear to be floating on the edge of the cliff, offer a unique and romantic experience.
There are also several other accommodation options, each striking and luxurious. The staff are attentive but unobtrusive, meals and wines are top-notch and game drives with knowledgeable guides are a highlight, sometimes incorporating lunch in the bush or tracking nocturnal creatures.

2. Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, Oudekraal
There is no better place to get the feeling that you have arrived than in the Presidential Suite of the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa at Oudekraal, named as among the World’s Best 500 Hotels of 2014. With the superb vista of the Atlantic Ocean stretching as far as the eye can see, and with nothing to disturb your innate good taste, this is one heck of a place to unwind in great style.
The suite features Italian chandeliers, antique mirrors, a free-standing antique marble bath, and marble flooring with underfloor heating should it get a bit cool on your pampered feet. Mosaics and finely carved panels feature on floors, walls, and ceilings. A second bathroom and wood-panelled study add to the luxury of it all. The totally secluded terrace is just the place for sunset drinks or that intimate dinner brought to you by your very own butler. Should you want to extend your party, you can add another Master Suite or go for broke with ten friends and take the entire floor, a total of five interleading rooms and suites on the Lion’s Head upper floor of the hotel.
