“The Cape Winelands District, 1 000 things to do and then some wine!”
These words aptly describe the unique experiences available to visitors to the Cape Winelands District. Whether you are a local exploring everything our country has to offer or an international traveller wondering where to go and what to do, the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) welcomes you and yours to our incredible spaces.
The Cape Winelands district is made up of five sub-districts covering an area of 22 309 square kilometres. It stretches from Stellenbosch to Paarl, through majestic mountain passes to Tulbagh, Ceres or Op-die-Berg; via the Huguenot Tunnel to Worcester and into the Hex River Valley, along the N1 to Touwsriver. For a slower return drive, leisurely wind through backroads to Montagu and from there through Robertson before heading out of the Cape Winelands. The biggest advantage is that these destinations are accessible within a 30- to 120-minute drive on well-maintained roads from Cape Town.
The district offers something for everyone, so whether you’re a thrill-seeking mountain biker, a group of fitness junkies, festival-goers, wine (or gin, beer or brandy) connoisseurs, a family of foodies, birders, campers, glampers, or a couple searching for that perfect wedding spot, there’s enough to keep anyone and everyone of all ages and sizes busy. The trick is knowing where to go and what to do.

Looking for somewhere to have a boozy lunch, hike a trail or spend the night? This helpful app puts a complete guide to the region in the palm of your hand. You’ll get info about various routes in the area, events taking place during your visit and not-to-be-missed local and historical sites. The app has been over a year in the making and finally launched on 12 September 2019 after an extensive research and development phase. The app was inspired by CWDM and developed by Indigo New Media, a digital collaboration company building smart mobile apps that influence communities.
