Buckets and spades. Cricket on the beach. Bodyboarding. Ice cream in the sun. Sunburn and salty skin. These are what make up the classic beach holiday, the kind of holiday the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is famous for. And the foundation of these holidays has long been family hotels like the Blue Marlin in Scottburgh.
For over 60 years the Blue Marlin has been a favourite family holiday destination, perched on a green hill above the Scottburgh beach. Now it has been relaunched, with over R35 million invested in upgrading the rooms and facilities over the past 2 years.
We recently popped down to check out the revamp for ourselves. Not only have all the public areas, such as the bar, restaurant, decks and reception, been revitalised and modernised, but so has lots of the accommodation, with the rest scheduled for the near future.
Fancy diving or snorkelling at the world-famous Aliwal Shoal? It’s a quick boat ride away, and there’s even a dive shop in the hotel. Golf? Courses are all over the place down here. Tired after a day of kite-surfing? There’s also an in-house spa. And a short walk from the hotel is the long, curved Scottburgh beach with world-class swimming and surfing. Head in the opposite direction and you find yourself in the quaint little town, filled with shops and restaurants.
If you hanker after the holidays of your youth, but with modern facilities, we reckon the Blue Marlin is a good bet for your buck. – Stephen Smith
